Monday 11/26: Snack Now, Volunteer Later–Help Us Host the Poetry Out Loud Contest in January

We invite students to drop by the department’s newly refurbished conference room at 72 George Street on Monday, November 26th from 3:30-5:15 and learn about volunteering for the upcoming Poetry Out Loud competition in January. Refreshments will be served to fortify students as we head into the final days of the semester.

Poetry Out Loud is a poetry recitation contest for high school students, sponsored by the Nat’l Endowment for the Arts. Schools in our region send the winners of their contests to a regional competition, each region sends three finalists to the state competition, and then each state sends a winner to the national competition.

On Sunday, January 13, the Department of English and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences will be hosting the Region 3 Poetry Out Loud competition in the Stern Center Ballroom from 1:30-4:30 p.m.

We’re seeking interested student volunteers to help us host the event. We need campus greeters to help contestants (and their teachers and friends/family) find their way from parking garages to the Stern Center. We also need volunteers to serve as production assistants during the competition. And of course all the contestants will appreciate having an interested audience when they recite their poems.  This will be a really enjoyable afternoon, and we hope to see lots of C of C poetry lovers there.

Anyone interested in volunteering at the event or helping us spread the word beforehand should come by 72 George Street Monday, November 26, from 3:30 to 5:15. (Refreshments WILL include caffeine.) If you want to participate but can’t come by on the 26th, contact Dr. Julia Eichelberger at eichelbergerj@cofc.edu.
