Lab Equipment

Lab Equipment Checkout Policy

The Expressive Culture Lab loans media equipment kits to actively enrolled College of Charleston students for academic-related projects (i.e. course assignments, research). The following is a general explanation of the Expressive Culture Lab’s loan policy which serves to minimize the liabilities associated with such loans.

The Center for Expressive Culture reserves the right to update the policy as deemed necessary and appropriate.

Borrowers
Media equipment loans are only available to current College of Charleston students in good standing, with a valid College ID. Borrower names and College ID numbers will be kept on file throughout the semester.

A Loan Application Form (pdf), signed by the student and a College of Charleston  Sociology & Anthropology faculty member, is required before any loans can be made to the student. This form will also be kept on file throughout the semester.

Expressive Culture Lab media equipment is strictly for academic use (i.e. course-related assignments/projects, research) and not for extracurricular activities beyond the scope of the course curriculum.

Each loan is processed per equipment kit and made on the basis that the student has no equipment currently on loan. Only one type of equipment will be loaned out per student at one time.

The Loan Process
Equipment kits are checked out on a first-come, first-served basis. Equipment may be re-checked, depending on availability and demand.

All equipment will be inspected by the faculty or staff member in attendance to ensure proper functionality prior to the release, and upon the return, of all equipment.

The equipment kit check-out/check-in process will take approximately fifteen minutes, perhaps more. Students are urged to plan accordingly.

The Expressive Culture Lab reserves the right to recall equipment for any cause.

Loan Period
Equipment kits are available for checkout for a one week period. Checkouts may be extended on a per week basis with your instructor’s permission, depending on reservations and the needs of other users.

There is no charge for equipment loans. There are, however, fees assessed if the equipment is not returned. Students should be aware of these fees when checking out equipment.

Liability
In the event of theft, loss or damage, the student is fully responsible for all costs associated with the repair or replacement of the media equipment and any software/accessories included in the kit.  Please verify that all “kit” components are accounted for and in working condition.

The repair/replacement costs will vary depending on the media equipment. Exact costs will depend on the cost of replacement of the equipment, as decided by the Department of Sociology & Anthropology. For some equipment this may be several hundred dollars.

All equipment checked out to a student must be turned in at end of the term, otherwise final grades will be withheld.

All files or programs which are not the property of the Department of Sociology & Anthropology are deleted as part of the equipment maintenance process.

Making a Reservation
If you would like to place a reservation please use the comment feature to send a request to the instructor.

Remember to include:

1) Your name
2) The equipment/kit you wish to borrow
3) The dates you are requesting (the loan period is for 7 days)

Equipment Kits Available for Checkout

The digital camcorder should be returned with a blank tape. If the borrower wishes to keep the tape with their raw footage they can return a new blank tape with the following specifications: digital mini video cassette (Camcorder Tape), 60/90-minute. The tapes are available from most office supply stores and CVS on St. Phillips Street often has them in stock. An example can be found at Office Max.

FLIP Video software is available to edit videos on this device. The software is installed on the device (mac and pc versions) and on all lab computers. The video files are stored in the DCIM folder and can be imported directly into iMovie.

HuckleBerry software (iglasses) is required to run this device. It is installed on all lab computers. If this device is checked out prior arrangements will need to be made with your instructor to discuss the logistics of using this equipment outside of class.

iPods have been configured to sync manually using iTunes. The software is installed on all lab computers.

Tripods: Verify that the mounting plate is attached to the tripod when checking the item in and out.

Equipment Available for Use in the Lab

15 Macbooks kits are available for use in the lab. The kits include: a laptop, power adapter, USB Mouse, Headset, and MyBook External Drive (w/USB cable and power adapter), for backing up class data.  Macbook laptops are equipped with USB 2.0, FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 ports, and double-layer DVD burners. These computers run OS X natively, and Windows XP via Parallels software and have access to general computing software and a variety of programs for editing audio, video and images, authoring DVDs, and publishing multimedia projects.

1 Dell Color Laser 5110CN Printer is available for use in the lab.

This equipment is available for in-class use only and must be returned at the end of each session.

Note(s):
Dell Printer Information: IP: 153.9.4.13  queue: \\george\Bell207 (for PC)
MyBook External Drives are formatted for Mac Only (necessary for video backups). CHECK OUT CONSISTENT DRIVE AND COMPUTER NUMBER TO EACH STUDENT IN CLASS. (I.E. MY BOOK_O1 WILL BE ASSIGNED TO THE SAME STUDENT AS MACBOOK BELL_207_01)

I was unable to bring the camera kit to lab today, because of circumstances relating to not wanting to carry it through the rain. I am glad to deliver it to the hands of any group that requests it.
