Hello everyone:
Although everyone is responsible for all of the readings, you can learn from each other by focusing on specific readings and by working in teams.
Below are listed the reading assignments for 10-1-08. Those of you doing the coverage, please try to “teach” the chapter to the best of your ability.
Try to explain why this knowledge is important for people doing research in expressive culture (and/or research in general).
You may want to create a handout to enable student discussion.
Try to keep your “performance part” to ten minutes each.
See the syllabus for more details on the readings.
Thanks to all! Enjoy these readings,
Moore Quinn

Hello all:
I hope that some of you will think about applying for this conference opportunity. The fact that you attended (if you get chosen) will look great on a resumé! Anthropology majors should definitely think about it! Note that the application deadline is October 10.

Hello all:
Are there any students who might want to attend this event? Kendall Haven promises to take us “behind the scenes” of successful storytelling.
I will give extra credit to anyone who would like to attend, but I need to know which session you might like to attend so that I can give a head count to the organizers.
Thanks and please let me know if you would like to attend,
Moore Quinn
PS We will post to the blog, but do let me know so that I can pass the word, and thanks!

I just wanted to remind y’all about the Kendall Haven storytelling sessions. I hope that you will agree with me that this is a wonderful opportunity for ourselves and our students.
The sessions will take place on Friday October 17th in the Alumni Center of the SOEHHP. The content of the sessions is identical so you have a choice of times:
1. 9:00 until 10:45 am
2. 11:00 until 12:45 pm
Please RSVP if you are attending either session. Also please announce this event to your classes and either send me a head count or have the students e-mail me (blakem@cofc.edu) directly. I have attached a flyer for your convenience.
Sincerely,
Mary

I have posted a new reading to E-Res you might find of interest titled “Thinking about Fieldwork.” The reading provides another set of questions you might use when thinking about designing your fieldwork projects. Although it’s geared specifically to those working in music-related fieldwork, the questions can be used for any project. I like this reading because it provides the “big picture,” from design to conducting to completing a project.

Come hear and join in this vibrant, southern-style hymn singing from The Sacred Harp, a songbook originally published in the 1840s. No experience is necessary; all are welcome.

Let us know what you think of additional lab hours.
Moore and Joey
- John I think we need more lab hours. Preferably after 8pm.
- smcrow sounds good to me.
- kcstewart It really depends on when you would have them.
- ldmoreira I would additional hours, and I think that they are necessary. I think that allowing us time to work without any time constraints would end up being much more productive in terms of final output. Some people work best at times not suitable to others.
- Lindsay Good idea. Anytime in the evenings during the week are great.
- Anahita Tipnis Additional lab hours is a good idea. My schedule is a bit chaotic but I’m sure that I can make time.
- jcneligan Sure
- smgreen I would like to have additional optional hours to use the mac’s in the lab.
- csleibman It could be useful to get extra help when trying out new technology.
