American as Apple (Pie)

The Steve Jobs success story is nothing short of the American Dream. He represents the underdog; the “Average Joe” who faced and overcame numerous adversaries to become an American success story. In his commencement speech to students at Stanford University, Jobs reflects on his life and tell the three stories that he believes defined his life and legacy. Each story focuses on a different experience, stressing “connecting the dots,” “love and loss,” and finally “death.” This speech is an example of an American narrative because it shows how the ideal American dream of success is achievable. Jobs’ story shows how someone from humble beginnings can prosper in America. Through hard work and determination, they can climb their way to the top and create their own success story. America continues to be a place that provides endless opportunities and allows for anyone, no matter what their background or beginning, to find success.

Jobs stresses to the new graduates that they must “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” He tells them that their time is now and that they have to lead their lives in way that makes them happy. He also stresses the importance of hard work and how it can achieve even the craziest of dreams.  All these ideals stress the idea that America is the land of opportunity; it is the place where dreams come true. In America, any one person can be the next Steve Jobs, which Jobs himself recognizes and stresses to the graduates going out in the world. His speech serves to inspire them to go and live out their own American dream.
