Course Requirements

Participation and Module Activities……………………………………125 points total

Please read the activity directions found within each module carefully. Active participation in module activities is a major requirement of this course. Activities vary in expectations and time commitment; many require student engagement with others enrolled in the course. Use proper netiquette and grammar when posting activities on the discussion board. Respect the opinions of others. The instructor reserves the right to delete inappropriate responses. See “sample discussion postings” on WebCt for examples and non-examples of appropriate posts. Please see the course schedule for due dates.

Book Reviews and Presentations………………………………………..60 points total

Part one: Students will complete three book reviews. Book reviews include one title listed from the comprehensive overview section, one title from the interventions and resources section, and one title from the personal accounts section. Part two: Students will select one book and develop a comprehensive powerpoint presentation. See appendix A for book review and powerpoint guidelines. For approved book list, see appendix B. Additional titles not listed require professor approval.

Exams 25 points each……………………………………………………..75 points total

Students will complete three multiple-choice exams. Exams are open-book, open-note, and must taken by the student of record ONLY, without the assistance of others. Students may re-take the exam ONCE. In the event of a re-take, the most recent grade stands. Please refer to the course schedule for due dates and exam timelines.

Position Statement 60 points……………………………………………60 points total

Students will write a research-based position statement that addresses specific controversial issues introduced in this class. Statement should also depict personal experiences, attitudes, and perceptions that were changed, modified, or enhanced resulting from this course. Students should use a minimum of three references to support their position.

Final Exam: Program Development Project………………………….100 points total

Students will work collaboratively to develop an individualized program based on an assigned case study of an individual with HFA/AS. Students will incorporate elements discussed within the course including assessment selection, program model, educational delivery selection, interventions and strategies selections for each area of need. The program development project should also include potential transition options, and options for parent/family support. Basic guidelines and discussion prompts will be discussed the first week of class with specific project expectations and comprehensive rubric released one week before the final exam date.
