Today is National Service Day. Lexa Keane, urban gardening coordinator in our Grounds Department, knew from her supervisor Paty Cowden that we were interested in the concept of ‘vertical gardening.’ She teamed up with Allyson Bloom, Americorps VISTA, who helps create one-time service events for the Center for Civic Engagement. They proposed a project to us that we were delighted to accept and facilitate. Lexa and Allyson brought about a dozen volunteers to ECDC this afternoon who spoke to the children about the National Service Day, and engaged them in helping weed their garden, fill and plant two vertical garden containers that will be affixed to the playground wall inside their garden. The children were thrilled to help and very excited about the plants they chose that include edibles and a variety of colors and textures. They spoke to the children about what they will need to do to nurse the new plants along and keep them healthy. A win-win for everyone!P1020475 P1020481

Our babies are talking!

Our babies are talking!

Friday, Sept. 6, 2013

Ms. Mary heard lots of noise coming from the dramatic play area this morning and went to investigate. As she started to remind the children playing there that loud voices were for outside, she was informed that they couldn’t help it; they were so excited because ALL FIVE BABY DOLLS HAD STARTED TALKING AT THE SAME TIME! One said, “that means they will all be walking soon, too—” A casual stroll around the building reveals that the curriculum is in full swing, play is developing in interesting ways outdoors, and we are “in our groove.”

We have been working for some time now on meeting the requirements for certification as a NatureExplore classroom through the Arbor Foundation and Dimensions Educational Research Foundation. We recently learned we have been approved and designated as the first program in SC to earn this certification! We submitted many photos and a narrative explaining how we meet the NE standards to provide an effective outdoor learning environment to connect our children with the world of nature. Look for a press release soon in the local papers.
