No getting around it; Halloween is our favorite holiday – While we would certainly not advocate organizing or focusing an entire year of curricular activities around holidays, we do highly value community and family traditions in our wonderfully diverse community, and we just have a really great time with Halloween. Thanks to our campus community for coming out to greet our children during their costume parade, and to our fantastic parents for participating in the parade and organizing room parties. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a healthy Halloween party ever – Halloween 131 Apparently, if you TELL the children it’s a party, they will eat whatever you provide – even if it happens to be good for them!

IMG_2327Our school this morning had special visitors; Charleston Mayor Joe Riley and TV mediaIMG_2339 came to encourage our children to participate in the national “Great Shakeout” Earthquake drill. Since the Lowcountry has experienced significant earthquake events in the past, this is an entirely appropriate (and required) thing for us to do. Dr. Erin Beutel from the CofC Geology Department did a fantastic job helping the children understand the three different types of tremors and taught them a dance that ends with the “drop & cover” position recommended in a seismic event. We loved having the mayor here to practice with us and to show him that even little children can be prepared (without fear) for the unexpected.
