On Friday, the Butterflies traveled by trolly bus to the City Gallery at Waterfront Park. The exhibition was entitled “Mermaids and Merwomen in Black Folklore: a Fiber Arts Exhibition”. The children were definitely engaged with the colorful work. They viewed two floors of art; discussing the images and observing techniques. We ended our visit with each child selecting a work to draw. Clipboards in hand (they go with us everywhere), children were distributed all over the exhibit intently studying and sketching. Their level of focus was impressive and discussion among the children fascinating to hear. Their interest has continued since returning from the trip, and we expect to see it resurface in activities during the coming weeks.

ECDC participated this week in practice and a drill as part of the Great Southeast Earthquake Drill. Lots of people aren’t aware of the history of earthquakes in our area and we were happy to help our children learn about what an earthquake is and how to prepare for protecting themselves in the event one would occur. Thanks to Erin Beiutel from the Geology Department and Cindi Hall from the SC Space Grant Office for helping us plan and practice with our children. Cindi came to ECDC on Tuesday and taught all the children the “earthquake wave” dance and helped them practice how to stop, find a table to hide under, and cover their heads. We practiced at 10:18 this morning and were impressed with the children’s calm, orderly drill, and how well they remembered what Cindi taught them earlier.
