The LDOS (Last Day of School) is always bittersweet for us, as invariably we have to bid farewell to families and children we have come to know and love. So a few tears will be shed, but we definitely went out in style this year with the Seashell/Sunflower Olympics this morning, complete with torch parade, relays, and parachuting.

Butterfly children have been hard at it learning about and exploring different media and approaches to three-dimensional art. Recently they made a trip to the sculpture studio and constructed a group mixed-media relief (complete with lightbulbs) under the watchful and encouraging eye of Professor Jarod Charzewski. They enjoyed it so much they have continued to work with clay, plaster, and found objects, creating individual reliefs that are currently on display.

A group of graduate students from the Environmental Sciences program has been working with us over the past semester to install a rainwater collection system on the playground. They finished up their work today with a painted mural that not only shows the children how the system works, but involved them in the painting as well. Altogether enjoyable experience for all!

It's a mulch storm!

The wood mulch on our playground is something of an iconic feature, and part of the ECDC play tradition – it serves as much more than a ground cover – the children use it for everything from making pretend soup in the playhouse to fill for dump trucks and art projects. This morning we had new mulch delivered and sand for the sandbox (which was down to about a foot below sea level). It turned into a major spectator event with all kinds of comments and questions from the peanut gallery about the blower tubes, the trucks, the workmen, the huge shovels they were using to move the sand, etc. As they watched the mulch being blown over the playground, Mae declared it to be “a mulch storm.” The sandbox is now pristine and mulch-free as well, so there was much pleading to go in it barefoot “because it’s just like at the beach….”

Our Summer I session has started and it is time to relax, enjoy the weather and our friends, and ease out of “school mode.” Water days are a fixed feature of the week. Seashell and Sunflower teachers have combined the groups and are working on an ocean study. Butterfly children have taken their ongoing exploration of power, force, and motion outside. They have also been enjoying walking and trolley trips to Piccolo Spoleto events and are focusing on sculpture as an art form.
