YWCA Greater Charleston: Seeking Event/Program Intern

Position Description: The YWCA Greater Charleston is seeking an intern to work with the Social Justice Racial Equity Coordinator on planning and coordinating our social justice/racial equity programs.  The YWCA Greater Charleston is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.  The following programs fall under our current social justice/racial equity division:

  • Our MLK Celebration is one of the first national tributes of its kind. It is South Carolina’s largest commemorative MLK tribute, attracting more than 30,000 celebrants from every walk of life–each one focused on eliminating racism across our city, state, and nation. This 10-day celebration includes events throught the tri-county to includes a youth poerty slam, the federal holiday parade, various worship services and the business and professional breakfast.
  • The Racial Equity Institute (REI) is a two-day racism training program designed to help leaders and organizations who want to proactively understand and address racism, both in their organization and in the community where the organization is working.
  • April’s annual Stand Against Racism is a signature campaign of YWCA to raise awareness about the negative impact of institutional and structural racism. Annually hundreds of YWCA’s across the country conduct community awareness events drawing attention to this nationwide issue.

Additionally, the intern will have the opportunity to work with the supervisor on developing a new initiative, program or assessment tool that matches his/her interests, skills, talents and passion. The project will be designed to benefit the YWCA as well as the intern’s future career/educational goals.
