Overview: Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim (KKBE) in Charleston is acknowledged as the birthplace of reform Judaism in the United States and its synagogue building is the oldest in continuous use in the United States. The synagogue and its offices are located on Hasell Street, just off King Street, just a few blocks from the main campus of the College of Charleston. The synagogue building, constructed in 1840, is an outstanding example of Greek Revival style architecture. It replaced a 1794 Georgian style structure that was destroyed by fire in 1838. The synagogue building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1980.

Tourism: The City of Charleston has been the top rated American destination city by Travel and Leisure magazine since 2013. KKBE is the 10th most popular tourist attraction in Charleston, according the Trip Advisor’s Best Things to Do in Charleston. KKBE currently offers as many as four docent-led synagogue tours each day to meet the demand from visitors.

Description: KKBE is looking for a qualified marketing intern who will be guided by KKBE’s Executive Director and the Tourism Committee to help improve and digitize the synagogue’s tourism-related marketing efforts, both print and online.


  • Learn about the history of the Synagogue and how it relates to the history of religious freedom in Charleston and South Carolina
  • Sit in with the synagogue’s docent-led tours to gain a better understanding of visitors’ interests to help identify marketing and fund-raising opportunities.
  • Identify, gather and compile visitor information and data that can used for direct marketing for KKBE’s fund raising activities.
  • Identify ways to improve the collection of visitor information and data
  • Perform analysis of current synagogue historical and marketing materials
  • Create and develop marketing materials to educate and attract new members
  • Provide support to social media efforts
  • Maintain tracking of tourism visits
  • Assist in the creation of tourism-related video presentations


  • KKBE is looking candidates who have an interest in digital media and marketing, Charleston history, non-profit management, architecture, museums and preservation. Jewish Studies or related areas.
  • Flexible daytime hours during the academic semester
  • Must be very personable and have strong communication skills to work with senior synagogue leadership and synagogue visitors from around the world

Learning Objectives:

The intern will:

  • gain hands-on experience will all aspects of the synagogue’s tourism marketing program
  • gain valuable experience in applying marketing and social media efforts in improving visibility of a non-profit organization both locally and nationally
  • have the opportunity to conduct interviews with key members of the synagogue’s staff and executive board
  • be able to apply marketing and public relations techniques to help improve the synagogue’s visibility as a tourism destination.
