CofC African American Studies Program: Seeking Social Media and Marketing Intern

With Who:  African American Studies Program, at the College of Charleston

Dates:  Full semester, Fall 2019 (8-10 hours per week)

Position Description:  The intern will assist with creating, gathering, and planning multimedia/digital content to be used for the promotion of AAST events and programs. Primary communication tools include a website, social media, and a digital newsletter. The intern will assist as needed with production planning, editing and promoting a new podcast series. The intern will assist with prepping and refining content for the website, taking photos/video at events, and creating content for Facebook.

Supervisor:  The intern will be mentored and supervised by the Director of African American Studies and the administrative assistant for the program. The intern will begin with an orientation and schedule of tasks, have weekly meetings with his/her supervisor and end the semester with an evaluation.

Qualifications:  A qualified candidate will have experience in communications or marketing, photography, with strong writing and organizational/planning skills. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, Hootsuite, and/or Facebook is helpful but not required.

Learning Objectives: 

  • The intern will employ multimedia communication skills in the promotion of the African American Studies program and events.
  • The intern will develop strategies for effectively communicating and creating thoughtful and effective content customized for a diverse demographic.
  • The intern will engage in community engagement through the creation of Facebook events, posts and ads.
  • The intern will apply knowledge of the website redesign process and engage in content review, planning, editing and creation.
  • The intern will develop a portfolio of digital media content.

Compensation:  Unpaid internship–course credit available for CofC students
