With Who:  The Echo Project & Chernoff Newman

Location:  Remote (based in Columbia, SC)

Dates:  Fall 2020

Hours:  15 per week

Compensation:  $10 per hour (depending on the candidate’s school schedule and can be used for course credit)

Position Description:  (This is a paid internship.) Chernoff Newman is looking for a student interested in developing their skills in social media who will work with the PR and social team to create and execute social content for the Echo Project. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the internship will be held virtually.

The story of the Echo Project began in Laurens, S.C., when Reverend David Kennedy, a Black Baptist Minister and Civil Rights activist, took in a homeless Michael Burden Jr., owner of The Redneck Shop, a white supremacist store and meeting place for the Ku Klux Klan. In the ultimate act of forgiveness, Reverend Kennedy gave Burden a home, food for his family, and a place to worship at New Beginnings Missionary Baptist Church. The store was later sold to Reverend Kennedy and closed for good in 2012. Reverend Kennedy is rebuilding the property as a community center and beacon of hope. He dreams of the property as a home to fostering community dialogue and reconciliation, celebrating diversity in our state and helping to educate the next generation.

(The story of Mike Burden and Reverend Kennedy’s friendship inspired the book Burden which was later adapted into a film, BURDEN, which premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and won the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award.)
