CITY OF CHARLESTON SEEKS COMMUNICATIONS FOCUSED AMERICORPS VISTA MEMBER

POSITION OPENING: AmeriCorps VISTA member: “Communicating Resilience and Sustainability”

AmeriCorps is hiring a communications focused VISTA member to join the City of Charleston’s Mayor’s Office of Resilience in Charleston, SC to create an effective system of communication and outreach.

Project Goal and Member Duties:

The VISTA member will work to build capacity to enhance community outreach, particularly to vulnerable populations, about the City of Charleston’s sustainability and resilience goals.  The VISTA will develop a Public Engagement Plan and associated Educational Campaigns and tools to increase the communities’ collective understanding of climate protection and vulnerabilities, sustainable living practices, and what each person can do to make a difference to protect and improve their health and quality of life.

1) Develop a Public Engagement Plan

Develop a comprehensive, multi-faceted Public Engagement Plan concerning climate protection and vulnerabilities, sustainability, energy efficiency, and renewable energy.  This plan should target vulnerable populations, businesses, faith communities, schools, and the general public.

2) Develop Community Education Campaigns and Engagement Toolbox

Develop action items (i.e. education programs, tools, resources) identified in the Public Engagement Plan to increase awareness, understanding, and support for more environmentally-driven practices.

Term of Service:

The VISTA member’s term of service will be full time for one year, from June 10, 2019 –  June 9, 2020.  M-F, 9-5pm.

About AmeriCorps VISTA Program:

AmeriCorps VISTA members build capacity in nonprofit organizations and public agencies to help them more effectively generate the commitment of private sector resources, encourage volunteer service at the local level, and empower individuals and communities. AmeriCorps VISTA members serve full time for one-year terms.

Qualifications:

The successful applicant for the position will meet the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications or a related field

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with common online social media platforms
  • A general knowledge and interest of sustainable and resilient practices is strongly preferred
  • Access to a vehicle is strongly recommended

Marketing intern-Pet Helpers

  • Social media posts and additional marketing materials to reach the Pet Helpers audience.
  • Design and present new marketing campaigns
  • Take photos of new animals that enter the shelter and share throughout social media through daily unique posts and videos.
  • Contribute to mock-ups, eblasts, press releases, email campaigns, and social media campaigns
  • Help with planning and hosting marketing events.
  • Collaboration with departments on new ideas to reach target audiences (ie ACTS, Shelter Director, Fund-Development Manager, Adoptions Manager).

Internship at MUSC National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center –

Outpatient Clinic

NCVC is an outpatient mental health clinic for children and adults who experienced a traumatic event such as sexual assault, domestic violence, or physical assault.  Interns will assist with a service oriented project working with victims of crime.  Responsibilities will include contacting victims of crime via phone who are scheduled for mental health counseling to help with coordination of follow-up care, assisting with transporting families to victim-related appointments, child care in out patient clinic waiting room, and possibility to become involved in other research projects. Data entry in SPSS. Opportunities to observe support groups for family members of homicide victims and local child abuse community staffings. Internship at MUSC National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center –

Hispanic Outreach Program Esperanza (VOCA HOPE)

NCVC is an outpatient mental health clinic for children and adults who experienced a traumatic event such as sexual assault, domestic violence, or physical assault. The VOCA HOPE Program is housed within the NCVC and works directly with Hispanic victims of crime (men, women, and children), in order to help create a network of supportive services in the Tri-County area. Interns will assist with a service oriented project working with Hispanic victims who have endured traumatic experiences at any point in their lives and who are currently reporting trauma symptoms. Responsibilities will include contacting victims of crime via phone who are scheduled for mental health counseling to help with coordination of follow-up care, assisting with transporting families to victim-related appointments, providing child care in waiting rooms while victims attend appointments, representing the program in community tabling events, translating and assisting with the design of psychoeducational material for victims, and the possibility of becoming involved in other projects and assisting with data entry in SPSS. Depending on the intern’s availability, there may be opportunities to observe treatment groups for victims of interpersonal violence, child abuse community staffings, as well as shadowing case managers during phone screens. This program is located at the National Crime Victims Center at MUSC. 10-15 hours per week for a complete semester and 20-40 hours per week for summer position. 3.0 GPA is required. Grey Ghost Bakery is looking for an undergraduate student who is majoring in Communication, Sales, Marketing or Advertising. This person should have excellent verbal and written communication skills, with extensive knowledge of Web and social media. PowerPoint, Word and Excel experience is a bonus, and will be considered when choosing the best applicant for this internship position. Looking for 15 hours a week and must have transportation to our offices on James Island.
