Volunteer with Charleston YOUth Count

By Cassandra P. Foster
Posted on 9 May 2018 | 11:14 am —

The Joseph P. Riley Jr. Center for Livable Communities, a College of Charleston organization, is beginning the process of recruiting volunteers for Summer canvassing.

Volunteers will be working with The Charleston YOUth Count, an effort to count and bring resources to youth experiencing homelessness in our city.

Last year, the Riley Center conducted a study that found that an estimated one third of College of Charleston students struggle with not having enough food to eat or a secure place to sleep at night. The scope of the problem for the rest of Charleston is unclear, but through the YOUth Count we are gathering data to find out rates of food and housing insecurity and work to provide individuals in our community much needed resources and support. We learned a lot during our first data collection period in the Spring and are ready to get back into the field, but we need your help!

As a volunteer, your role would involve surveying participants, disseminating information and bringing resources to young people experiencing homelessness. You will receive free CITI training, gain practical research experience, on-the-ground experience with diverse populations, and you will truly make a difference in your community. Please navigate to our Facebook page to learn more about us https://www.facebook.com/CHSYouthCount/. Once you’re ready to join our team, use this link to apply: https://goo.gl/forms/Xu4Mdbm3DqyNULc42

We strongly encourage adults and community members to apply as we would like to have a diverse group of volunteers from a variety of backgrounds – everyone has something to bring to the table.

Housing and food insecurity is a prevalent issue in our own backyard, and with your help, we can take steps to eradicate it and ensure everyone in our community has the services they need!
