Faculty Reserve Letter

Dear faculty,

We are ready to begin processing “electronic and hard copy” reserve materials for the fall.  I hope this letter finds each of you well, as we prepare to move from summer break into the fall semester.  The library and the Circulation department want to ensure that you are well informed of updates and changes made to our electronic and traditional reserve services before we transition into another academic semester.  Also, we hope you will find these updates and changes to be timely, efficient and helpful.

The Reserve Process

Please bring the separate collated articles along with citations since all paper documents must be scanned before they can appear on your electronic course page.   Please bring the best quality copy to be scanned.  Also, be sure to include the title as it appears on the course syllabus.  Although, we try to process reserves as quickly as we receive them, please keep in mind there is a 72 hour processing period.  Due to the number of reserves we receive at the beginning of a semester, it may be even longer.  It is very important that you submit the electronic reserve form before sending your reserve documents.  You may access the reserve form at http://www.cofc.edu/library/faculty/eres/course/index.php.  Sending the documents before submitting the form will delay processing.  For those who may want to put articles from microfilm on reserve, the library has added a state of the art microfilm scanner. Please be advised due to time constraints we are unable to scan your microfilm documents.

Also, in the summer of 2009 the Shelving Department merged with the Circulation Department.   As a result of the merger, we are pleased to offer you some additional services.   We are prepared, upon request, to retrieve books from the library’s collection to be processed for faculty hard copy reserves.  However, we are unable to make photo copies from books or journals at this time.

If you are using our electronic reserve system for the first time or have in the past and wish to manage and maintain your own course page, you may do so by contacting the Circulation Department and scheduling an appointment.  Faculty members who manage their own electronic reserve pages are responsible for adhering to copyright guidelines.

Students can request and purchase course packs thru the College bookstore or an outside company such as SasE-ink, A&E, etc.  A percentage of the revenue generated from course packs requested and sold thru the bookstore goes toward CofC scholarships.

If you are not in position to bring your reserve material at this time, please bring reserve items to be processed to the Circulation desk before 08.16.2010.  This will allow us to process your request more quickly and accurately.  Our objective is to have your material processed and available for your students the first week of classes.  Receiving reserve materials after 08.16.2010 may delay the processing and completion of your e-reserve course page.

We look forward to assisting you with your reserve materials this fall semester.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at reserves@cofc.edu or contact us at 953-8001.

Thank you.

What’s New? A State of the Art Microfilm Scanner

With the growing demand for innovative technology and prompt efficient service, the library has added a state of the art microfilm scanner.  The new Scan Pro desk top compact microfilm machine is a high resolution, fast speed machine that will support all type of microforms.  The Scan Pro is connected to a windows PC.  You have the option to save images to the computer hard drive or you can save to a thumb drive.   Also, images may be sent across the network to a distant device or even sent via email.   “Its software automatically applies filters to enhance the image and remove the effect of scratches and other blemishes on your microfilm images, quickly and efficiently”.  The Scan Pro is located near the color printer in the Addlestone computer lab.  In addition, there are two Minolta microfilm machines and a laser printer in the open space near the microfilm cabinets on the second floor.  The microfilm room on the second has been re-purposed and is now being used as a study room for students.

Jacob Murray Scholarship

The Jacob Murray Memorial Book Fund is a textbook stipend to support students who have demonstrated financial need. The fund was established in 1986 to honor Jacob Murray, an excellent reference librarian at the College of Charleston. He served the College in addition to his full time work in the Charleston County Schools, including holding the rank of Assistant Principal and coach at James Island High School for many years.

Jacob Murray was one of Charleston’s most outstanding citizens. He was an entrepreneur and was widely known through out the business community.

Applications may be submitted to the Circulation Department at the Marlene and Nathan Addlestone Library Monday through Thursday from 7:30 AM to midnight, Fridays from 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM and Sundays from 10:00 AM to midnight by November 16, 2009. Applications for submission may be downloaded from the Jacob Murray link.

Reserve Copyright Permission Alternatives

Using direct links to articles in the library databases will help you avoid copyright issues and also allow us to process your materials more quickly since there is no scanning involved.  Once you have found an article you would like to use in one of our databases, the link can be emailed to reserves@cofc.edu.  Please include the title, course number and instructor’s name in the email message.

Other Alternatives

  • Many of our Library journals allow photocopying for educational purposes
  • Legally link to free Internet sources
  • Place multiple copies of the book on hard copy reserve
  • Use different sources each semester

If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Circulation Department at 953-8001.  We will be happy to assist you!
