Sustainability Week 2015
The Office of Sustainability hosts the 4th annual Sustainability Week
From Monday, April 6 to Saturday, April 11, the Office of Sustainability will host a series of events for the College’s fourth annual Sustainability Week. This year’s events incorporate the idea of redefining value. Whether this is valuing ourselves, others, and products, the events aim to get people thinking about how value is attached to things and the difference of value versus cost/price.
Monday, April 6
Sustainability Week & Greek Week Kickoff Concert & Art Walk
5pm-7pm in Stern Center Gardens
Hosted by Office of Sustainability, Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, and 1770 Records
Join us for the kickoff event for the College’s annual Sustainability Week and Greek Week from 5-7pm at Stern Center Gardens! A collaboration with the CofC Fraternity & Sorority Life, CofC Office of Sustainability and 1770 Records, the kickoff event will feature a local food cook off competition between Greek organizations, an art walk, and concert featuring creative works around the theme of engagement, social justice, community, and sustainability. The event is free and open to the community. Hope to see you there for great food and great jams!

Campus Waste Audit
7am-7pm in Cougar Mall
Hosted by Alliance for Planet Earth
Alliance for Planet Earth’s main mission is to create an active sustainability culture between members of the community and to promote the importance of landfill diversion. As part of Sustainability Week, they will be sorting through trash collected from different facilities around campus such as dorms, cafeterias, and classrooms into various categories to determine how much could have been diverted. Food Chains Documentary Showing

Hosted by the Center for Civic Engagement’s Alternative Break Miami Group
Join the Migrant Labor Health Miami Alternative Break Group in their screening of the documentary Food Chains. The film discusses the human aspect of our food system by presenting the current issues faced by farmworkers in Immokolee Florida.

Dr. Raj Patel Keynote Speech
5:30 pm in the Sottile Theatre
Closed Reception Hosted by the Economics and Political Science Departments
Dr. Patel is a passionate economist and activist who has authored several insightful books critiquing world food systems and the effects of globalization while providing hopeful and sustainable solutions. Patel specializes in economics and received degrees from the University of Oxford, the London School of Economics, and Cornell University. For a short time, he worked for the World Bank and the World Trade Organization and has become one of their most outspoken critics. Patel’s keynote speech will be based on his book, The Value of Nothing: How to Reshape Market Society and Redefine Democracy. The event is free and open to the community.

How do you move? Do you walk, bike, or use public transit? Join the Office of Sustainability and participate in the College’s first official event celebrating the different modes of transportation that the College community uses to commute to campus. The set for this year’s production will feature aspects of sustainable design. Tickets are $15, but are only $10 for CofC students/faculty/staff/seniors.

DIY Salt Scrub Workshop
2-3pm at the Office of Sustainability (284 King A)
RSVP Required
Join us for a D.I.Y. workshop on how to make your own salt scrub at CofC’s Office of Sustainability! This workshop will be a hands-on experience where participants make their own salt scrubs and learn about various natural ingredients and their healing powers. Participants will be able to hand select their own ingredients to tailor them to their individual needs. The Office will supply all materials, including jars and ingredients.

It’s time for a sustainable makeover- permaculture style! Come out and get dirty at our first ever perma-blitz on campus hosted by the College’s Grounds Department! We will be building a garden as a community-flash mob but garden style-at the Warren Street apartment parking lot, so the more hands, the merrier! Bring your bandana and meet us at the front entrance of the parking lot (between 10 Warren and 20 Warren) for a community garden build workday and some good ol’ fashion fun!
4th Annual Student Diversity Conference: Creative Consciousness
Friday, April 10th and Saturday, April 11th
Hosted by the Office of Institutional Diversity
The Student Diversity Conference is an annual event hosted by the Office of Institutional Diversity (OID) and it’s co-sponsors. The Conference is primarily planned and facilitated by the student group affiliated with OID, the Diversity Advocates. This year’s theme is Creative Consciousness and will feature Hari Kondabolu, a Brooklyn-based, Queens-raised comic who the NY Times has called “one of the most exciting political comics in stand-up today.” The Conference will include a Social Justice Symposium and workshops on feminism, cultural appropriation, racism in the criminal justice system and much more! The Office of Sustainability is a co-sponsor and will support the Zero Waste vision for the Conference. Students can register at diversity.cofc.edu
Saturday, April 11
Native Bees and Hive Building Workshop
10am-2pm at the Student Garden at Dixie Plantation
Hosted by the Student Garden at Dixie Plantation and the Center for Civic Engagement
Transportation Provided – RSVP Required
Our final workshop of this semester, Native Bees and Hive Building, will educate students about the importance of protecting our bee populations and be a hands-on experience where students will create habitats that attract pollinators, at the end of the day they’ll get to take home their own bee house made of wood and other found materials. This event is part of Spring into Service. Transportation is provided! Space is limited. Please register at studentgarden@cofc.edu.
