Sustainability Week 2013

From Monday, April 8 to Thursday, April 11, the Office of Sustainability will host the College’s second Annual Sustainability Week. The theme of this year’s Sustainability Week is Food Security.

Sustainability Week 2013

Events include:

Monday 4/8:

Farmer’s Market (Co-hosted by Dining Services)

Time: 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Location: Physicians Promenade

This will be the first event collaboration between the Office of Sustainability and Dining Services. The Farmer’s Market will include local farmers and vendors selling their produce and products, as well as a pop-up restaurant hosted by Aramark. This will also be the first time that local Charleston farmers will be able to sell their produce on campus. Meet the farmer who grows your food!

Local Foods Cookoff (Hosted by Greek Sustainability Chairs)

Time: 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Location: Physicians Promenade

Greek chapters face off trying to concoct the best recipe using local foods.

Sponsored by AKA and Green CofC: “A Place at the Table” Documentary Showing and Lowcountry Food Bank Fundraiser, Green CofC Potluck

Time: 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Location: Maybank 100

Co-hosted by AKA, Green CofC, and the Office of Sustainability. Attendees are asked to bring either three canned goods or $3 for the showing and potluck. All proceeds will be donated to the Lowcountry Food Bank.

 

Tuesday 4/9:

 Trash Audit

Time: 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Location: Cougar Mall

The Alliance for Planet Earth (APE) will be conducting an audit of the contents of the trash at the College. They will be educating students, faculty, and staff about the things they throw away.

Greenbag Lunch Series: “Sustainability and National Security” with Colonel Mark “Puck” Mykleby

Time: 12:00 – 1:30 p.m.

Location: Alumni Center (86 Wentworth)

Former advisor to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Colonel Mykleby is also a retired marine who has served five tours overseas. He will discuss how national security concerns should transition from foreign enemies to domestic sustainability. Light refreshments will be served.

 

Wednesday 4/10:

Political Science Garden Workday

Time: 4:00 – 5:30 p.m.

Location: Political Science Garden (Corner of Wentworth and St. Philip)

After falling into disrepair, the Office of Sustainability is collaborating with two student organizations – Green CofC and the Political Science Club – to bring the garden back to its former glory. Come join us for the replanting of the garden. Compost generated by City Bistro dining hall will be used.

Making a Case for Sustainability

Time: 6:00 – 8:30 p.m.

Location: Wells Fargo Auditorium (Beatty)

Collaborating with the Business School, this event will include both a panel discussion and networking opportunities with local businesses and professors. From 6:00 – 7:00 p.m., there will be networking and a reception. The panel discussion will begin at seven and will include: Dianne Culhane – Retired Coca-Cola Senior Executive, Public Affairs and Communications: How Coca Cola developed vision for sustainable community and strategies to achieve that vision, a Boeing representative: How they built Boeing Charleston, Chris Rein – Cape Cod Wind Farm, Fisher Recycle – the Business of Recycling.

The event will also include the video showings of the top three finalists of the Green Cup: The GreenCup, in partnership with the Sustainability Office, seeks to promote better understanding of sustainability and its practice. Participants can create a 3 minute or less YouTube video about sustainability in the community.

 

Thursday 4/11:

Keynote Speaker Dr. Oppenlander: “Comfortably Unaware”

Time: 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.

Location: Towell Library (Cistern Yard)

The Office of Sustainability reception from 4:30 – 5:00 p.m. will include unveiling new initiatives, talking about the past year, etc. Dr. Oppenlander, an advocate of sustainability and health, has published Comfortably Unaware, an exploration into our current food system. He will speak (including a discussion) from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
