John Cordray, Physical Plant

Briefly describe your role.

I’m the Director of the Physical Plant.  However, I like to think of myself as a “servant leader,” providing tools and support for folks preforming their every day job.

What is the function of your department?

To serve students, faculty, and staff at the College by providing services associated with facility planning, designing, construction, maintenance, operation, and repairs to all physical aspects (facilities, utility systems, grounds, and other infrastructure) of the campus in a responsive, proactive, code compliant, sustainable, state-of-the-art, cost efficient and service-oriented manner that complements and enhances the instructional, research, historical preservation and public service missions of the campus.

Goals and objectives are organized into two broad categories. The first category is overarching goals that encompass everything we do. These goals center on safety and welfare of Physical Plant employees, faculty, staff, and students. The second category is functional goals that keep us focused on fulfilling our mission statement as described above and execution of goals and recommendations cited in the campus-wide Campus Master and Strategic Plans and with the recommendations cited in the National Park Service (NPS) Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation and Repair of Historical Structures within a National Historic Landmark (NHL) District.

How long have you been working at the College?

Five years and having fun!

What brought you to the College?

Fate, fortune, and destiny!  Who knows?!  I was retiring from 34 successful years with the Department of Defense (Naval Facilities Engineering Command), and I stumbled across the Human Resources job announcement. I knew from the onset it was a good fit and a wonderful opportunity.

What do you like most about your job?

Diversity of the folks, the historical nature of the campus and the daily facility challenges.  I can’t wait to see what each day has to offer!

What are some of your favorite memories from the College?

Knowing Joanna, my daughter and a current student at the College, enjoys being here (on campus) as much as I do.

What are your hobbies and interests?

Catamaran sailing, HAM Radio, genealogy, and the Physical Plant.

What is something that your colleagues would be surprised to learn about you?

I have always wanted to be a Catholic Priest and a “Canon Law” expert.
