February 18 & 19 Study Skill Seminar-Take your Best Test!

Students often use the first test of the semester to test their own test preparation and test taking skills: “Are the methods and strategies I am using working for me?” If the answer is “no”, it may be time to make some changes, so the results on the second test aren’t a carbon copy of the first test! But where and how do they begin to make changes to their study strategies? At this week’s Study Skills Seminar

students will have the opportunity to replenish their test preparation and test taking toolbox with New Strategies for both Objective and Essay Tests. We will focus on Tips to Try Before, During, and After the Test, and will emphasize Strategies that Encourage Thinking Critically, as opposed to simply memorizing mountains of material.

Study Skill Seminar: Read and Remember

Many students report that academic reading falls to the bottom of the ‘To Do’ list fairly in the semester, in favor of more immediate homework assignments, projects, and papers. The intent is always to “catch up before the test”, but, alas, when pages and chapters pile up, it is often difficult to get back on track. At this week’s Study Skills Seminar

we will address ways to tackle academic reading before it becomes unmanageable, including suggestions for breaking up tasks, and a variety of Active Reading Strategies designed to improve reading engagement and retention, and also help you create study guides from reading assignments.

If you are struggling with reading in a class this semester, please bring your textbooks to the Seminar, so you may see how specific strategies can be applied to your reading assignments, giving you a ‘springboard’ for jumping into the text right away!

Study Skill Seminar January 28 & 29: Re-think Research!

When you revolve through the doors of the Addlestone Library to begin researching topics for upcoming papers and projects, are you overwhelmed by the vast array of print and online resources available? Are you unsure of where to begin? Or do you approach the task with confidence, searching databases, locating periodicals, and scanning the stacks with ease? If this third scenario describes you, it is likely that they have already met with and received assistance from the friendly, knowledgeable staff at the Addlestone Library!

all students will have the opportunity to become more informed and less alarmed about library research as they meet with Tom Gilson and Phillip Powell, Addlestone librarians. Tom and Phil will guide students through the wide variety of resources available at the library, will teach them how to search more efficiently and effectively online, and will introduce them to the many ways that they may meet with and talk with real, live librarians about their papers and projects (the best resource of all!)

Whether your students are new to library research or are seasoned professionals, they will add to their knowledge of all things library this week!
