Fall 2011 – Welcome- Use Resources

Welcome to the Fall 2011 semester.
Please utilize resources on campus to help you have a successfull semester.

One resource I would like to highlight is the Center for Student Learning, located on the First Floor of the Addlestone Library. Students may receive tutoring on a walk-in basis (accounting, math, Spanish and French, writing, speaking) or by appointment (subject area tutoring, all other foreign languages). They also offer a series of Study Skill Seminars.

I will try to highlight other resources and give updates about the Study Skill Seminars throughout the semester.

It is Reading Day! Good Luck on Finals!

Make sure you verify the time, day, and location of all of your finals. Check your course syllabus (for location, time and day. You can also check the list on the Office of the Registrar for the time and day: http://registrar.cofc.edu/pdf/Exam_Schedule_Fall2010.pdf

5 things you can do to improve Midterm grades.

You have your midterm grades …now what?

You are now feeling really good about this semester, aren’t you?

Or are you very worried?  You could be somewhere in between.

Here are 5 things to do if you are worried about your Midterm grades:

Talk to the Instructor.

  • Check the syllabus for his/her office hours. Stay after class or come to class early. E-mail the instructor. The professors at the College of Charleston want to help you succeed, but they can’t read your minds.

Go to the Center for Student Learning in the Library.

  • The CSL is a service that is FREE! (O.K. you do pay tuition.) Their services include: Tutoring, Math Lab, Writing Lab, Speaking Lab, Language Lab, and help with Study Skills.

Do not miss another class.

  • You may have missed a class or two and that means you missed material that was covered on a test or quiz. If you are worried about your grade, you cannot afford to miss any material.

Manage your time differently.

  • It is time to prioritize your time. You may need to cut back or stop working (if you can afford it). Cut back or stop extracurricular activities such as a club or organizations. Playing video games or updating your Facebook profile may not be the most productive use of your time.

Find some study buddies!

  •  It is not easy to study by yourself all of the time. Finding a study partner or group you can split up tasks, ask and answer questions, stay awake and alert longer, share ideas.

Some of the ideas above have been borrowed from the College of Charleston Center for Student Learning.
