Successful Online Classes

Chuck Sorcabal – Mt San Antonio Community College

The gentleman speaking uses several software pkgs. He uses blackboard, nettuor.com, screenwatch.com, graphing calc (www.ticalc.org) and microphone.

He creates and delivers lectures asynch via movies. Screenwatch creates the movie and sends it to a streaming server. He delivers them and organizes things via Blackbd. He uses the publisher’s Course Compass to do homework.

Nettutor has an online whiteboard and has a camera so it’s like your there. also akkows u to archive the session. all the students have mics. Pretty cool piece of software. It allows you to speak with students, capture stuff from anywhere and collaborate. the professor uses this for office hours instead of lecture delivery. He captures a real-time lecture so they experience how he would lecture normally (not sure if this is nec good). This pgm also allows for pre-made tutoring. He requires voice chat because he teaches math and type chatting takes too long with formulas. He said that the nettutor usage varies by the students in the class.

I’m not sure if the voice is part of Nettutor because he mentioned Adobe Communicator for a one time fee of $250. He recommends a headset instead of mic and speakers because of noise and feedback. It’s impt to set ground rules for asking questions. Someone questioned the accessibility of the audio only format. You can do video to help with this.

Quizzes – has the stu do the quiz on paper then fax it in because he wants them to wk the problems and show the work.

Capturing lecture: 1hr lecture is 40 mb with screenwatch. He also uses Smartnotebook. This is only good if you have a board serial number.
