Student Happenings: Intern Goes Behind the Scenes at Irish Theatre School

Q&A Spotlight with Senior Carter Rice

Senior and Arts Management major Carter Rice spent all of last semester studying abroad in Ireland. Her time overseas featured amazing experiences, including exploring the picturesque countryside. And soaking up
the famous Irish culture. And processing check payments.

“I kept thinking back to Chris Burgess’s class,” Rice says. “And the importance of financial management within arts organizations.” Rice credits her Arts Management courses, including Chris Burgess’ Arts Financial Management class, with laying the foundation for the wide variety of work she undertook at her internship with the Gaiety School of Acting at the National Theatre School of Ireland in Dublin.

Message From the Director: 2017

What a year it’s been!

Our program continues to grow as one of the College of Charleston’s innovative, interdisciplinary programs. In 2015, we were named one of 5 fastest growing majors at the College. During the past academic year, 328 majors were involved in a myriad of teaching-learning activities including academic coursework, volunteer opportunities, and internship experiences.  In May, we graduated 69 of them – many who are gainfully employed in Charleston and around the country at Rawle Murdy Advertising Associates, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Blackbaud on Daniel Island, and Studio Theatre in Washington, D.C. We placed 106 students as interns with 84 arts and cultural organizations and businesses. Eleven of our students completed summer internships in New York City, Hollywood and Beverly Hills, Nashville, and Boston. Our program was even represented by summer interns in cultural institutions around the world in Kamuela, Hawaii; Paddington, Australia; and Paris, France!

Many thanks to Mark Bryan, the Artist-in-Residence for our Music Industry Concentration, for his work over the past several years that resulted in the program’s first study abroad program. Coordinated by Program Coordinator, Claire Long, seven students were enrolled in our Global Music Industry Study Abroad Program in Sweden in July. In Stockholm and at the University of Örebro, they studied songwriting, artist management, streaming, video marketing, festival management and completed releases guided by Bryan, Long, and Swedish musicians and music professionals.

We have also been busy with ongoing fundraising efforts for our first endowment – the Scott Shanklin-Peterson Internship Endowment. We welcomed many of you at the formal announcement of the Endowment in May that was coupled with our first annual gathering of Arts Management Alumni. Our 2nd annual alumni event is scheduled for May 6, 2018, and will be hosted by alumni from the Arts Management Class of 2010. Spread the word – we look forward to seeing many of our alumni during that weekend.

Thank you, each of you, for your support of the Arts Management Program over the years, and in the years to come. We’re making you proud!

-Dr. Chandler

Alumni Updates: Alum Finds a New Arts Community in the D.C. Theatre World

Q&A Spotlight with Carolyn McCalley ‘17

The Arts Management Program has an interesting way of connecting past arts experiences with future professions. Take, for example, recent alumna Carolyn McCalley ‘17. Though she was involved in various productions during high school, McCalley never considered the theatre as a potential career outlet until she discovered the Arts Management Program.

“I came to CofC as a Spanish major,” McCalley says. “But I took an Arts Management class because I had never heard of anything like it.” The introductory class piqued her interest and led to a freshman year internship which allowed her to “gain more information about the field as a whole.”

From there, she immersed herself in the Charleston arts scene. These experiences eventually opened the door for a move to Washington, D.C., where she now works at Studio Theatre, one of the city’s premier homes for contemporary stage productions.

To learn more about Carolyn’s experiences at the College of Charleston and with Studio Theatre, check out our Q&A below:
