Program News: Arts Management Launches Its First Endowment

Introducing the Scott Shanklin-Peterson Internship Endowment

With a lead gift in 2014, adjunct faculty member and seasoned arts administrator Judith Allen established the Scott Shanklin-Peterson Internship Endowment to commemorate the achievements of her friend and colleague, Scott Shanklin-Peterson. The endowment, which Allen is supplementing with a Legacy Gift, offers financial stipends for students who complete internships for course credit while attending the College of Charleston and working full- or part-time.

Shanklin-Peterson, former Executive Director of the South Carolina Arts Commission and Senior Deputy Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, served as director of the Arts Management Program from 2001-2014.  She currently serves as the program’s Senior Fellow and is the Board President of Engaging Creative Minds in Charleston. Among her many accomplishments are the phenomenal growth of the undergraduate program, the development of a Music Industry concentration with Hootie and the Blowfish’s Mark Bryan as Artist-in-Residence, and the strengthening and formation of a graduate certificate program and concentrations in arts management in the Master in Public Administration Program and the recently-established Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing.

Allen is the former Managing Director of the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford, Connecticut, and President of the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in Charlotte, NC. She successfully grew the Blumenthal into a $22 million annual operation, and established it as a national arts presenting venue. Allen teaches several courses in the Arts Management Program including ARTM 360 (Senior Seminar: Life and Career Planning) and ARTM 400 (Internships in Arts Management).
