What are Lunch & Learns?

Lunch & Learns is a lecture series for the expanded learning community (that means afterschool, summer and enrichment programs). They’re affordable, monthly events that feature a short talk and lunch. Lunch & Learns started last year with College of Charleston’s Afterschool & Summer Learning Resource Center (ASLRC). Each event celebrates local innovators, experts, and  success stories related to the field of expanded learning and promotes an open space for those looking for inspiration, connection, and professional growth. Lunch & Learns happen one day a month, usually a Thursday between 11-1pm.

Why attend a Lunch & Learn?

You will gain insights and best practice relevant to your work with youth.

From academic experts to successful program directors, Lunch & Learn speakers are selected by a committee of dedicated individuals from the Charleston Promise Neighborhood, Kaleidoscope, Dorchester School District Two, WINGS for Kids, College of Charleston, and the Lowcountry Children’s Museum. Past speakers include accomplished individuals such as Robin Berlinskey from Engaging Creative Minds and Maisha Rounds local educator and creator of a literacy outreach program. Speakers share their expertise and lessons they’ve learned through their work with youth and in doing so, pass on invaluable knowledge to those working in expanded learning programs. You will walk away from the event feeling motivated and inspired to apply those lessons to your own work.

Make valuable connections.

Every event includes networking time before and after the lecture. This is a great opportunity to meet with others working across programs of various sizes and disciplines who are willing to share and learn from one another. By attending the event and representing your program there, you will be able to tell others about what you do and make connections that can help you in the future. Lunch & Learns are accessible to a broad spectrum of those working in expanded learning, from those working on the front-lines with children in the public school to those leading their own youth-focused non-profits and businesses, as well as site coordinators across the Tri-County area, school district administrators, local park & recreation departments, and local museums. Attendees connect to build partnerships and meet potential new collaborators.

Bring back lessons and best practices to share with your colleagues.

Lunch & Learns are filled with talented people eager to share and collaborate, after listening to an inspiring talk and meeting with others in a spirited environment, you will head back to your program filled with new ideas and information worthy of sharing with your colleagues.

We hope you and your colleagues can join us for the next one!
