Palmetto Artisans

We’ve all seen or encountered the children in downtown Charleston selling the palmetto roses, perhaps purchasing one or two on occasion. Perhaps you’ve also noticed the booths set up in various areas or those selling the roses wearing bright yellow shirts. Its these young sellers who are part of Charleston Recreation Department’s Youth Palmetto Art and Business Program. The idea is to train and supervise these young entrepreneurs ages 9 to 18 in order to ensure they’re abiding by local laws regarding their sales as well as keep them safe. The recreation department provides a free training to teach entrepreneurial skills as well as how to make the roses if they don’t know already. Additional opportunities are also being considered such as offering bulk sales to event planners. While other kids their age may be playing with friends after school or on the weekends, these children have recognized the potential to make some money for themselves and are working hard for it. Why not show some support for these young entrepreneurs, purchasing a rose here and there as well as encouraging other sellers, who haven’t joined the recreation department’s program, to get involved?
