I had always heard about how wonderful and awe-inspiring Avery was, but to actually visit made me feel like a kid in a candy store. The Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture  at the College of Charleston was established in 1985. The Center maintains an archive of primary and secondary source material of nearly 4,000 holdings that encourage scholarship, research, and presentations by scholars, researchers, and students. The Center also operates as a small museum, a national historic site with a listing on the National Register of Historic Sites, and a cultural center. Anyone who is doing any major research on African American History has their starting point here in Charleston and more specifically the Avery Research Center. When visiting campus please make Avery one of your stops! Check out their calendar for upcoming events.

Our new science center will open for classes in Spring 2010! We can already start taking “hard hat” tours, which is really exciting!

The new building will include an auditorium for presentations, a wet/dry fossil museum and rooftop terraces for receptions! There will be brand new classrooms and laboratories too, of course. :)  The new science center will house all of our biology and chemistry programs, which is perfect timing for anyone going into Health Professions: http://spinner.cofc.edu/~healthprof/ and Marine Biology: http://spinner.cofc.edu/biology/!

College of Charleston was one of the first schools to have Discovery Informatics as an undergraduate program. Discovery Informatics is the study of computer data analysis, so if you are interested in Math, Computer Science or Statistics, this would be the perfect program for you! More information about that program is available here: http://discovery.cofc.edu/ . The director of the program is Dr. Chris Starr, who is honestly one of the most energizing and exciting people that I have ever met! If I went back for another bachelor’s degree, it would definitely be in something related to Computer Science. This man makes you want to study it, plus, you work with robots in one of your first classes! How cool is that? :)

We have always had strong science programs, but now we have an even better facility for them! Come check out the progress sometime on a campus tour or at an Open House http://www.cofc.edu/admissions/explorethecollege/campusvisits/index.php . We hope to see you soon!

Shabbat Fridays

As you know, last week the admissions counselors took part in training activities to help us reconnect with the college campus before we start our fall travel.  My favorite presentation was Jewish Studies.    I learned so much about the Jewish Student Union/Hillell.   I was amazed at the number of programs and activities the union sponsors throughout the academic year!  I was thrilled to hear everyone is invited and I can attend Shabbat Dinners on Friday nights.   In October the Jewish Studies Program will celebrate its 25th Anniversary.  There is a variety of planned activities scheduled.  Check out the website for more information.

Hey Everybody!

As you may have noticed, all of the admissions counselors are writing posts about different programs at the College of Charleston. My topic is the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs. LCWA (as we like to call it) is the youngest of our six academic schools but is definitely the rising star of the bunch. There are so many different opportunities for students in this school, the possibilities are truly endless! They are leading the charge to educate our students as Global Citizens, whether its majors and minors in languages and language studies, study abroad programs, new minors in Archaeology or upcoming new majors there are multiple ways to augment your education at the College of Charleston. I’ve pulled out four important facts about LCWA that you need to know:

1. We offer studies in 13 different languages. Some are offered as majors, others as minors and a few as concentrations. In addition to standard language programs like Spanish, French, Italian and Chinese, we offer some of the lesser known languages like Hindi, Arabic, and Portuguese. We are home to the largest Hispanic Studies Department    in the State, offer a Linguistics minor  and two masters’ degrees, Bi-lingual Legal Interpreting and Language Education

2. All College of Charleston students are required to take a language as part of their general Liberal Arts Degree. You can take placement tests in French, German and Latin. If you took Spanish you will be placed into Spanish at CofC depending on how many levels you took in high school.

3. While you do not have to be a language major to study abroad, LCWA offers study abroad scholarships for their major and/or minor students. These awards are not based on need and will apply for any trip abroad that CofC has approved. You can add this scholarship to one already awarded by the International Education Program!

4. CofC students can earn a Global Scholars designation. This is a unique combination of course work, extracurricular activities and study abroad experiences. A wonderful addition to any resume!

All in all, the School of Languages, Cultures and World Affairs is a tremendous asset to the College of Charleston. We’re very lucky to have a wonderfully diverse array of faculty who are committed to providing CofC students with the best possible education.

Entertaining students since 1770

Student Affairs is working hard as always to make student life the best around! Their office covers a huge number of departments including the Dean of Students Office, Student Leadership, Student Health Services, Student Life, Residence Life, Upward Bound, Center for Civic Engagement, Multicultural Student Programs and Services, Community Relations, Disability Services, Greek Life, Public Safety, CARE, Campus Recreation, and Facilities. Here are a few of the things I thought were extra special from their presentation to the Office of Admission:

Campus Recreation offers a Surf Clinic at Folly Beach, a Bike the Bridge & Mount Pleasant program, new group fitness programs in Taebo and Zumba, overnight theme trips including rock climbing and kayaking, midweek kayaking on Folly River and Shem Creek, and Play Days every Wednesday in the Johnson Center when students can come play dodgeball, kickball, racquetball, and even board games.

Healthy Meals is an 8-week activity where students cook a healthy meal and dine together, taught by a culinary school graduate, taking place in one of the residence halls. Find out more on the Campus Recreation website.

One more amazing student affairs activity is one that many of you may have heard of. The CofC Rave! Each year Student Government (SGA) ”secretly” plans a rave in the Addlestone Library to take the edge off finals week and give students a much needed study break. Check out videos of the rave complete with crowd surfing on the video on YouTube! here and here!

It’s all here at College of Charleston! See more at Student Affairs website.

Fame and Fortune Come to CofC’s School of the Arts

part 2/12

CofC’s School of the Arts has a ton of exciting things going on right now. Recently, we’ve seen a bit of fame coming to and from the area. Mark Bryan, lead guitarist for Hootie and the Blowfish, will be teaching a course on concert management this school year, so that will certainly be in high demand. And, Carol Hannah Whitfield, a former studio art major here, is a contestant on the new season of Project Runway. The whole campus will be cheering her on as she shows fashion addicts across the country the wealth of creativity we have coming from CofC!

The hottest topic at the SOTA, though, is probably their new building, the Marion and Wayland H. Cato Jr. Center for the Arts. sotabldgThe center has been in progress for years now, first as an idea and then as an actual structure, so anticipation for its opening increases daily. moveinsotaMembers of our arts faculty are eager to move into their new offices this fall, and everyone on campus will begin reaping the benefits of increased studio, performance, and teaching space in spring 2010.

To stay up to date check out the School of School of Arts Blog.
