Being Green

Greening up your computer and printer

  • Program computer to go into “sleep” mode after 5 minutes of no use; turn off when leaving each day
  • Install Green Print www.greenprint.com to prevent printing last page of print job
  • Recycle printer cartridges
  • Scan documents to store them digitally
  • If you must print, print double sided with small margins, small fonts, and little white space

Energy conservation

  • Turn off lights, even small lamps, when you’re not in the office
  • Use daylight rather than office lights when available
  • Turn off computer, printer, etc. when leaving
  • Bring a sweater and socks to replace personal heaters
  • Audit AC/DC converters that draw energy even when not in use

Reduce, reuse, recycle

  • Avoid bottled water; bring a pitcher or reusable plastic bottl
  • Use recycle bins for everything you can
  • Don’t print your syllabus or handouts!: use WebCT, your web page, wikis, blogs, e-reserves
  • Use the backs of sheets of paper for notes and draft printing
  • Encourage your students to print only when necessary; send and receive assignments by WebCT, email, a wiki, or your class blog
