Encyclopedia of Ed Tech (& Learning)!!!

When this site popped up on Tweetdeck this am, I thought, “Ho hum. Another online encyclopedia.”

Was I surprised when I checked it out. Not only does it have very user friendly articles about everything to do with educational technology, but also it has really helpful articles about various aspects of learning. I quickly added it to my links for students on my website. My class will be referencing this site frequently this semester. http://coe.sdsu.edu/EET

Speaking of encyclopedias, this one is just for your enjoyment–it’s Walter Lanz’s encyclopedia of cartoons (Woody Woodpecker, etc.) from the 1920s on. Some of us remember these, but not from the 20s! http://lanz.goldenagecartoons.com

Digital Downloads for Movies

Filed under: Uncategorized — daviss @ 1:23 pm

Film Fresh is offering digital downloads of feature films that can be played back on your PC or Mac, or burned to a DVD, or played on a DivX-certified device.

How to:  Go to Film Fresh’s website (see link above)  and find a movie you want to buy. Digital downloads range from about $10 – $13. You’ll be directed to the DivX player download page if you don’t already have it installed.

Film Fresh is better than services like Amazon and iTunes: you can burn your films to DVD or Blu-ray for playback in a DivX-certified DVD player. You can also transfer the movie to a USB stick (flash drive) and directly connect it to a Divx-certified device.

What is a blog and why should I want to use one?

Interested in trying out blogs in your classes? Not really sure what they are or how you can use them? Well, here are 1) a link to blog use in elementary education, 2) some ways you can use blogs in your class, and 3) a YouTube video that helps you picture what a blog is all about and what it does. I am testing blogs in my EDFS326 and used one last semester in EDEE610 with great results. I will be happy to share.

This link shows how blogs can be used in grades 3-5

Here are just a few ways blogs can be used in college classes

  • for students to reflect on class discussions, fields, and CP
  • for students to comment on and discuss course issues
  • for students to comment on new understandings from reading assignments
  • for professors to reflect (for the class) on the class just held (e.g., “I needed to give you one more example to clarify our discussion, ” “Here’s something else to consider,” “I thought of something I wanted to share with you about what Jan said in class related to . . .”)
  • for professors to announce the upcoming class agenda or reminders about assignments due
  • for professors to discuss with the class during class time when they are out with H1N1.

Great blog video from YouTube for the uninitiated: Just click on the arrow to begin the short video.
