Description: The Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program at the College of Charleston will join together with the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs to present the sixteenth annual A World of Jewish Culture at Piccolo Spoleto. Founded in 1998 to highlight Israel’s 50th birthday, the annual event celebrates Jewish cultural contributions to the arts worldwide.
The Herzman-Fishman Foundation continues its major sponsorship of this annual project at the Festival; Mindy Seltzer and Norton z”l have generously supplemented the Fishmans‘ support in recent years.
Los Angeles-based screenwriter and Harvard University alumnus Micah Fitzerman-Blue will return to present three international films in their Charleston debut, with a discussion to follow. Additionally, a three-part concert series is in the works, as well as an enlarged coffeehouse at Saffron Café and Bakery. The signature events for A World of Jewish Culture at Piccolo Spoleto 2013 will take place on Sunday, June 2,

(60min) Join mezzo-sopranos Laquavia Alston and Shanelle Woods as they explore the rich history of spirituals and poetry that has shaped the African American experience. Inspired by the legacy of singers such as Kathleen Battle and Jessye Norman, Alston and Woods pay homage to the singers who have striven to further the African American presence in opera and on national stages. Through the ever-present words of Langston Hughes, stories of faith and those of our culture are woven beautifully together in a tapestry that forgets not the shadows of past oppression while illuminating present progress - and sings with hope of what lies ahead. We, too, sing triumphantly of America. June 4 at 6pm. Tickets: $16 Adults; $11 Seniors/Students.

Free Angela is a gripping historic account of the events that catapulted a young University of California philosophy professor into a controversial political icon in the turbulent late 1960’s. Angela Davis joins the Communist Party, protests with the Black Panthers, and becomes a principle spokesperson for the burgeoning prison reform movement. As a result, she finds herself Fighting to keep her job, and in the national media spotlight characterized by her many detractors as a dangerous subversive menace, and by her supporters as a strong leader challenging authority and boldly advocating for “Power to All People.” So on August 7th, 1970, when Angela is implicated in the politically motivated kidnapping and murder of a judge in a brazen daylight shootout at the Marin County, CA courthouse, the nation wonders and Newsweek magazine asks: “What would prompt the daughter of the black bourgeoisie to take a desperate turn to terrorism?” Angela flees California, convinced she will not be given a fair trial and is placed on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list. After a national manhunt she is captured two months later in New York City. Charged with murder, kidnapping and conspiracy, Angela is put on trial in one of the most sensational court cases of its time. After a two-year legal battle, an all white jury acquits her on all charges in 1972.
